Police investigate voter fraud allegation in 2010 elections

MEDIA RELEASE

The county Police Department has initiated an investigation into an allegation of voter fraud on Hawaii Island.

The investigation was launched based on information provided by the county Office of Elections involving elections conducted in 2010.

Voter fraud, under section 19.3.5 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes, is a class C felony.

The investigation is being handled by Detectives of the Area I Criminal Investigation Section.

At this time, no other details will be released as it is an active investigation.

Statement from County Clerk Jamae Kawauchi, who also leads the county Elections Office:

On Sept. 11, 2012, the Office of the County Clerk received media inquires concerning the above-mentioned press release dated Sept. 11, 2012. As this is an active investigation, the Office of the County Clerk will not provide comment.

Statement from the State Elections Office:

The Office of Elections has no information regarding this fraud investigation. We have not received any communication or documentation from the county clerk regarding this matter.
