Gabbard to speak at Democratic National Convention (Sept. 4)

MEDIA RELEASE

Congressional candidate Tulsi Gabbard has been invited to speak at next week’s Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

Gabbard will have a prime time speaking role Tuesday, Sept. 4. She will address the convention in a segment led by House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Gabbard, a Captain in the Army National Guard, said, “It’s a great opportunity to represent Hawaii and to share our aloha with everyone. I’m humbled and honored to have been invited to speak on this national stage. I plan to speak about the immeasurable sacrifices made by our troops, with a special focus on women in uniform,”

Others speaking with her in the segment titled “The Women of the House” are Congresswomen Rosa DeLauro, Carolyn Maloney, Allyson Schwartz, Donna Edwards, Nydia Velazquez, and Gwen Moore. Gabbard and Congressional candidate Joyce Beatty round out the group.

The speeches will occur between 7-8pm Eastern.

Gabbard won the Democratic nomination in the 2nd Congressional District primary, besting her nearest competitor by 21 percent, and is the Democratic Party’s representative in the Nov. 6 general election.

On Aug. 16, she resigned her post as member of the Honolulu City Council to save taxpayers up to $150,000 that would be needed to fund an special mail-in election. Her replacement for Council District 6 will now be chosen in the general election.

As a member of the Hawaii National Guard, Gabbard served two tours of duty in the Middle East. She was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for her service and currently serves as a Captain.

Gabbard was the youngest person elected in Hawaii history, when in 2002 at the age of 21, she won a Hawaii State House seat. Two years later, she gave up her position in the Legislature to voluntarily join her fellow soldiers being deployed to a war zone in Iraq.

Between her two deployments to the Middle East, Gabbard served as an aide to U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka. In 2010 she was elected to the Honolulu City Council where she chaired the Safety, Economic Development, and Government Affairs committee.
