Hilo man dead after single car crash in Ka‘u Sunday (July 29)

A 25-year-old Hilo man died Sunday (July 29) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on July 23 on South Point Road approximately 5.5 miles south of Kamāʻoa Road.

Responding on July 23 to an 8:47 a.m. call, Kaʻū patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2001 Mercury sedan and traveling north on South Point Road when he ran off the right side of the road, lost control, struck a utility pole and overturned several times.

The victim was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

He was taken by helicopter to Kona Community Hospital and died on July 29 at 9:25 a.m.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were factors but speed may have been a factor in this crash.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 21st traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 15 at this time last year.
