Candidate forums slated across the island

Several community groups and organizations have scheduled candidate forums and events ahead of the Aug. 11 Primary Election.

All forums and events are open to the public.

* June 19, 6-7:30 p.m.

The Hawaii County League of Women Voters sponsors a moderated forum for State House Districts 5 and 6 (Kona) at the Hualalai Academy Bridge Building.

The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization established to promote political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government.

* June 26, 6-7:30 p.m.

Waikoloa nonprofit organizations at Waikoloa School, County Council Candidates for District 9 (Waikoloa, Waimea, Kohala)

* July 5, 6 p.m.

Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce and Japanese Chamber of Commerce at Sangha Hall, moderated forum for mayor

* July 9, 6 p.m.

Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce, Kealakehe High School Cafeteria, moderated forum for the Mayor candidates and the County Prosecutor candidates. The forum is at Kealakehe High School Cafeteria at 6 p.m, with food sales by the Kealakehe High Yearbook, starting at 5:15 (the public is encouraged to support the the school’s yearbook by enjoying dinner at the forum). The Mayor candidates who are confirmed are incumbent Mayor Billy Kenoi, who is seeking a second term; former Mayor Harry Kim, who’s seeking to return to public life after 8 years as Mayor and four years of retirement; County Council Chair Dominic Yagong, who has represented Hamakua on the County Council for 12 years, and Share Christie, wife of the incarcerated “Marijuana Minister” Roger Christie. The County Prosecutor Candidates are Lincoln Ashida, Mitchell Roth, and Paul Dolan.

Sherry Bracken (LAVA 105, KKOA, Hawaii Public Radio) will moderate the forums, which are sponsored by the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce, the Kohala Coast Resort Association, the Hawaii Island Board of Realtors, Rotary of Kona, West Hawaii Today, LAVA 105.3 fm/Mahalo Broadcasting, Hawaii 24/7, and Kealakehe High School.

Submit questions for any of the forums via email to info@lava105.com or via fax at 769-5050. The forums will all also be carried live on the radio on LAVA 105.3 fm, and will be broadcast on KLEI TV Channel 6 on the Tuesday evening following the forum. Na Leo O Hawaii Public Access Television will also film for later broadcast.

* July 11, 6 p.m.

Hilo League of Women Voters, Aunty Sally’s Luau Hale, a forum for Prosecuting Attorney, County Council Districts 1 and 2 and 3.

* July 12, 5:15 p.m.

Waimea Middle School, a moderated forum for candidates representing the Waimea area for State Senate and State House plus mayoral candidates.

* July 15, 3-7 p.m.

Hawaiian Paradise Park Forum for mayor and others, at Hawaiian Paradise Park Community Center.

* July 16, 5:30 p.m. (Note earlier time)

Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce, Kealakehe High School Cafeteria, (note earlier time), a moderated forum for United States Senate Candidates and U. S. House Candidates. For U S. Senate, the candidates are former Congressman Ed Case and attorney John Carroll and Pahoa resident Charles Collins. Note: Congresswoman Mazie Hirono has declined this and all other forums on Hawaii Island. The U.S. House Candidates Tulsi Gabbard, Mufi Hannemann, Esther Kia’aina and Bob Marx will be on stage. The Kealakehe High Yearbook team will sell food starting at 5 p.m.

* July 21, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Waimea Community Center on Kawaihae Road next to County Park.

South Kohala Traffic Safety Committee is hosting a public forum to discuss district traffic safety issues with the candidates running for the following offices: Hawaii County Mayor 1-2:30 p.m.; County Council District 9-10 a.m.; Prosecuting Attorney 10-11 a.m.; State Senate District 4 2:30-3:30 p.m.

The public is invited to listen to the candidates’ vision and goals regarding pre-distributed written questions from the SKTSC regarding important traffic safety issues and pending traffic improvement projects.

Candidates in rotation will have a set time to answer the question presented (1-2 minutes. There will be an open Question and Answer session with the audience after each office presentation.

* July 23, 6 p.m.

Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce, Kealakehe High School Cafeteria, a moderated forum for County Council Candidates for Council District 6 (South Kona-Ka’u; Brenda Ford, Maile David, Bradley Westervelt, and Lee Mcintosh), District 7 (Kainaliu to Kailua Village; Dru Kanuha), District 8 (North Kona; Karen Eoff and Charles Guccione). The Kealakehe High Yearbook team will sell food starting at 5:15 p.m.

Pahoa Neighborhood Place, mayor candidates

* July 28, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Big Island Chronicle, Akebono Theater, several candidate forums throughout the day, all moderated.

The County Clerk’s office will mail out yellow cards to registered voters by June 30.

Voters may register until July 12. Voters may participate in “Absentee Walk in Voting” between July 30 and Aug. 9.

* Aug. 6, 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Hamakua voters are invited to meet the candidates for Hawaii County Council District 1 during a public forum discussion 6:30-9:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6 at Honoka’a People’s Theatre.

District 1 candidates that are expected to participate include Eric Paul D’Almeida, Larry Gering, Jo Kim, Valerie Poindexter and Chelsea Yagong.

This forum is presented by the Honokaa Business Association. It’s free and pupu/refreshments will be provided.
