Hawaii County fire/rescue crews concluded a final day of searching for Tyler Madoff who was swept off the shoreline with another teen on Wednesday (July 4) near the Lighthouse at Kaawaloa outside of Kealakekua Bay in Kona.
The other teen – a 15-year-old from Florida – was injured. He was picked up by a private boat in the area and transported to Kona Community Hospital.
Crews on Monday performed an aerial search with Chopper 1 going 10 miles South and five miles North of Madoff’s last known location. Ground crews spent the day covering 1.5 miles North of the Captain Cook Monument. With improved water conditions divers searched underwater caves which were inaccessible on previous search days. Divers also cover the shoreline 1.5 miles North of the teen’s last known position in the water.
Recovery operations were concluded with no findings with the incident considered a fatality.
