Boat explosion at Honokohau Harbor sends one to the hospital

Firefighters and medics responded to a 6:25 p.m. alarm Tuesday (July 3) to Honokohau Harbor for a boat explosion.

A 25 foot rigid hull Zodiac owned by Sea Hawaii Rafting was on a trailer being launched at the mauka boat ramp when apparently gasoline fumes below the floorboards ignited and exploded according to a fire dispatch report. A male suffered a cut to his head along with singed hairs on his arms and face from the explosion. Medics report the victim was walking and talking at the scene with people applying a dressing to his bloody head wound. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital in good condition.

The boat fire was put out by Sea Hawaii Rafting staff and bystanders before firefighters arrived. The boat was reported to have an automatic extinguishing system.

The loss in the fire and explosion is estimated to be $3,000 with $150,000 saved. The cause of what led to the explosion and fire are unknown according to the fire dispatch report.
