Ka‘u man sentenced for child sex abuse

MEDIA RELEASE

Prosecuting Attorney Charlene Iboshi has announced Ka‘u resident David Kaawa was sentenced June 28 by Judge Ronald Ibarra to an indeterminate to 40 year prison sentence for sexually abusing a child.

Kaawa was tried in Kona Circuit Court in April on two Class A felony counts.

On April 26, a jury found he had continually abused a child in his care for years before the child turned 14 and he had again sexually assaulted the child after that time.

He was convicted by the jury of continuous sexual assault of a minor under the age of 14 and of sexual assault in the first degree.

Each charge required a mandatory indeterminate to 20 year prison sentence.

Ibarra ordered the two sentences to run consecutive to each other.
