Seems like Mr. Ellison’s primary goal is to transform the island of Lana’i into one of America’s Cup Racing facilities, a whole island, can you imagine that? Jobs, for the locals?, bottom of the tier at best. His, “record of community involvement in medical research and education causes”, secondary goals at best.

How does anyone have the ability to own an entire county in a state? One person effectively owns 1/7th (of the populated islands) in the state. How much power does that give him over the political process?
Why hasn’t the state used it’s eminent domain powers to take bake its territory?
Ni’ihau is another island that should be back under the state, not privately owned.
What’s next? Molokai? Or, if there is someone rich enough, Maui or the Big Island?
When one person can own so much of the state, the state is actually more a territory or a third world country.
