Hawaii Island – The Big Island Visitors Bureau (BIVB) is pleased to announce the addition of hospitality veteran Paul Horner to its team today as managing director of marketing.

In the newly created position, Horner will be responsible for overseeing the development, implementation and review of all marketing activities. Additionally, he will oversee the development of relationships with community leaders, government officials and marketing partners.

“I’m humbled and excited to be a part of the BIVB ohana and for the opportunity to lend my experience to market Hawaii, the Big Island to the world,” Horner said. “Hawaii Island has so much to offer as a world-class vacation destination with a rich culture and history, charming towns and resort areas, diverse activities and attractions, and unsurpassed natural beauty. It’s truly an inspiring place to be.”

Horner brings with him more than 25 years of industry experience, most recently serving as the resort manager at Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa for the last nine months. There, he was instrumental in the resort’s $16 million renovation and creating cultural programming for guests to enhance their understanding of the historic area. Prior to this, Horner served as general manager of the Keauhou Beach Resort from 2008, general manager of The Carneros Inn in Napa, Calif. from 2005 (working for The PlumpJack Management Group), and spent 12 years previously with Castle & Cooke Resorts as general manager of the Manele Bay Hotel and hotel manager at The Lodge at Koele on the island of Lanai.

“Paul’s addition to the marketing team gives us even more depth, expertise, and resources as we continue to rebrand Hawai‘i Island and increase travel demand and awareness for the island,” said George Applegate, BIVB’s executive director. “His leadership and intimate knowledge of Hawaii Island will be invaluable as we prepare for the future.”

A native of Hawaii, Horner is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Northwestern University. He is a member of the advisory board for the University of Hawaii at Hilo’s College of Business and Economics and serves as a board member for Habitat for Humanity and for the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce.
