Search for missing fisherman off South Point continues

Fire/rescue crews along with a Coast Guard cutter and aircraft continued their search Sunday morning (June 3) for a fisherman swept into the ocean at South Point in Ka‘u Saturday.

The man was hit by a wave while retrieving a fish net Saturday and was last seen 200 yeards off-shore by witnesses. Rescue crews again conducted both dive operations and a shoreline search for the missing man Sunday. The fire department’s Chopper one was used Sunday to conduct an aerial search up to a mile off-shore.

A Coast Guard Cutter conducted a search one to six miles off-shore while a C-130 aircraft few 2.5 to 17 miles off-shore. A Coast Guard helicopter will search throughout the night as it did Saturday night for the fisherman. Three buoys were deployed in the ocean to the determine the possible drift direction of the man.
