Man rescued from bottom of North Kohala shoreline cliff after being stuck overnight

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 7:04 a.m. alarm Tuesday morning to North Kohala for a man reported missing.

Upon arrival, while speaking to the missing man’s wife, police notified firefighters that the man had been spotted sitting on the rocky shoreline, fatigued and was unable to climb back up a cliff he was at the bottom of.

The man had been on the shoreline since late Monday afternoon and had tried to climb up the steep, 20-30 foot cliff with a rope without success. He had no cellphone to call for help.

The man stayed on the shoreline until the Fire Department’s Chopper One came to airlift him to safety using a Billy Pugh net.
