Kona gymnast heading to nationals

Nicole Cristobal, a level 9 gymnast, from Kona Aerials Gymnastics Team, attended the state meet April 31 on Oahu. Cristobal won first place in level 9, which qualified her for the Regional Meet in Beaverton, Ore.

Regionals consists of six states that come together with the top 12 athletes in each age division representing their state and club.

Cristobal took fourth place on vault and 11th place all around, which qualified her for nationals. The top 12 girls from the six states are invited to compete at the national level.

Cristobal is the only gymnast from the Big Island to qualify for Nationals, which is May 3-7 in Boise, Idaho.

Cristobal is 13 and has been competing in gymnastics for nine years. She is coached by Nanette Guiffrida-Kunkle, head coach at Kona Aerials which was established in 1989 here in Kona.
