The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a winter weather advisory for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa above 8,000 feet on the Big Island until noon Sunday (March 25).

An upper-leve trough passing over the Big Island through tonight is producing snow showers and freezing fog. Up to .5 inches of new snow is expected at elevations over 12,000 feet. Winds on the summits are from the East at 10-20 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

Mauna Kea Access Road was closed to the public Saturday afternoon (March 24) due to snow on summit roadways according to Mauna Kea Rangers.

The road is open to the pubic only up to the Visitor Information Station.
