Kaiser leading way in online health care

MEDIA RELEASE

With nearly 70,000 members going online to view lab results, refill prescriptions, communicate with their physicians, and schedule appointments, Kaiser Permanente leads the state in the delivery of online health care services.

Kaiser Permanente announced today the results of its 2011 electronic connectivity survey, which shows a significant increase over the past year in connectivity between patients and doctors, pharmacists and other health care providers via the web.

The data points to Kaiser Permanente’s continued leadership in using electronic health records to help physicians and health care providers coordinate care, strengthen the relationship members have with their doctors, and provide members with better care and service.

“For more than a decade, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has invested in interactive online systems to enhance service and convenience for our members,” said Hyewon Jun, MD, physician leader for Kaiser Permanente Hawaii’s online service.

“We’re pleased to see that our members in Hawaii are truly benefitting from our electronic health record system, KP HealthConnect, not only in terms of convenience and cost-efficiency, but, more importantly, from improved health care,” Jun said. “Patients can securely access their personal health information and the latest medical knowledge, taking greater advantage of Kaiser Permanente’s fully integrated approach to health care.”

KP HealthConnect is the world’s largest civilian electronic health record system securely connecting members to their physicians, health care teams and pharmacies.

Through this system, members can check their lab tests, order and refill prescriptions, email their doctors and other providers, review previous visit information, and make or cancel appointments, among other services.

2011 survey results include (numbers in parentheses show percentage increase from 2010):

* 492,904 (10.3%) Lab and test results viewed online
* 167,248 (13.7%) Prescriptions refilled online
* 142,499 (15.7%) Secure emails sent to doctors and other providers
* 66,014 (78.3%) Visits to past visit information
* 15,287 (32.5%) Appointments scheduled

KP HealthConnect® improves prevention and the coordination of care for members by enhancing the way physicians work together in real time with each member’s current data.

Through KP HealthConnect, every entry in a member’s record is securely integrated into a single electronic health record that is accessible to all Kaiser Permanente Hawaii physicians, providers and clinical support staff. Specialists no longer have to wait for the delivery of paper-based records and test results, and physicians in multiple locations can conduct virtual consultations.

Under appropriate patient confidentiality safeguards, secure electronic health records allow health care providers in different locations to collaborate and coordinate care for their patients based on current, comprehensive clinical information.

KP HealthConnect is a tool that helps physicians and providers to improve patient safety and the quality of care.

It was a major reason the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) listed Kaiser Permanente Hawaii as the highest-rated plan in the state based on quality and member satisfaction.

Additional recognition Kaiser Permanente Hawaii received in the past year include:

* HIMSS Analytics’ Stage 7 Award, the highest level on the Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model used to track EMR progress at hospitals and health systems, awarded to Kaiser Permanente’s Moanalua Medical Center

* NCQA’s Physician Practice Connections Patient-Centered Medical HomeTM (PCMH) Recognition at Level 3, the highest level, for Kaiser Permanente’s integrated and coordinated care delivery system, which supports quality, access, continuity of care, and better patient involvement, awarded to all 16 primary clinics and their primary care providers in Hawaii. Kaiser Permanente is the first multi-site PCMH health care organization in Hawaii to be recognized by NCQA.

* American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for excellence in the treatment of patients with heart failure, given to Moanalua Medical Center.

* Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA) Quality Award recognizing Kaiser Permanente’s achievement of a 5-star rating on the PQA measures of medication safety that are included in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Star Rating Program.

Earlier this year, Kaiser Permanente also launched a new app and mobile-optimized website, making patient information securely available on the go.

Kaiser Permanente patients in Hawaii can now easily access their own medical information anywhere in the world on mobile devices through a mobile-optimized website.

Nationally, 9 million Kaiser Permanente patients benefit from this mobile access.
