By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Fire/rescue responded to an 11:45 a.m. alarm Saturday (March 17) to Anaehoomalu Bay in Waikoloa for a missing swimmer.

Crews arrived to find a 10 year-old boy on the beach who was out spearfishing with his father. The boy had come back to shore due to dive mask problems and noticed that his father had not surfaced after watching him swimming about 100 yards offshore.

Crews began a search using freedivers and personnel on a rescue surfboard in the area where the man was last seen. Chopper one arrived on scene to join the search and the 54 year-old man was found on the bottom 100 yards offshore. Crews recovered the victim and brought him to shore in a billy pugh net to a medic unit. Crews were unable to revive the man. It is unknown at this time what caused the fatality.
