Atlantis appoints Fry as Kona general manager

Atlantis Adventures has announced Doug Fry, who has 22 years of management experience with the company, has been appointed as general manager of its Kona submarine tour operations on Hawaii Island.

Fry, who previously worked for Atlantis from 1985 to 2007, takes over the position formerly held by longtime Kona resident Mike Stanton, who retired from the company in February after 19 years.

“At the same time, we are very appreciative of Mike Stanton and thank him for his dedicated years of service for Atlantis and especially for all the fun and energy that he brought to our staff members and guests. We wish him all the best as he enjoys his retirement,” Williams said.

Stanton said, “I enjoyed my career with Atlantis immensely and had the wonderful fortune of working with a superb crew in one of the most beautiful settings in the world. I’m very happy to be turning over the reins to my friend Doug Fry, who is an ideal choice to further our mission of entertaining and educating guests about our marine world.”

Fry first joined Atlantis in 1985 and was part of the original assembly team of the firstAtlantis submarine in Vancouver, British Columbia before helping to launch the company’s tour operations at Grand Cayman (1985), St. Thomas (1986), and Guam (1988).

In 1990 he brought his skills to Hawaii in support of Atlantis’ growing tour operations,first as Oahu Operations Manager before being promoted to Director of Operations in 1993 and taking on the added responsibilities for the submarine tours in Lahaina, Maui, and Kona, a position he held until 1999.

He then moved to Florida to serve as Atlantis’ Director ofOperations for the Caribbean until 2007. Most recently, he served as Operations Manager for Great River Journey in Whitehorse, Canada.

Fry said, “I’m absolutely thrilled to be back with Atlantis and extremely happy about being able to work in beautiful Kona and live on the Big Island. We have one of the world’s most beautiful undersea environments to see and explore in Kailua Bay, and I look forward to working with our team to show our guests what makes the Kona submarine tour such a worthwhile and memorable experience.”

Atlantis Submarines operates its Kona tour in scenic Kailua Bay, using the world’s most advanced passenger submarine. Battery powered and emitting no pollutants into the ocean, the 65-foot, 48-passenger submarine quietly descends to depths of more than 100 feet into crystal-clear waters that are teeming with fish and marine life.

Other highlights of the tour include a beautiful 25-acre coral reef garden formed over ancient lava flows and two sunken shipwrecks that have transformed by nature into artificial reefs.
