Winter weather and wind advisories for Big Island summits

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a Winter weather advisory for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above the 8,000 foot level until 6 p.m. this Wednesday (March 7).

Up to three additional inches of snow are forcast which will make driving hazardous due to slippery roads and low visibility.

The Mauna Kea Access Road remains closed to the public due to snow covering the roadway.

A wind advisory has also been issued for Big Island summits above 8,000 feet until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Winds are currently Southwest from 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. The strong winds can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles like trucks and vans.
