The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a high surf warning for East facing shores of the Big Island until 6 p.m. Tuesday (March 6).
A large North-Northeast swell is forecast to generate surf in the 10 to 15 foot range.
The rough surf will produce dangerous rip currents and battering waves that will pound shoreline areas.
A small craft advisory is in effect for Windward waters of the Big Island and the Alenuihaha Channel until 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Boaters should be alert to heavy harbor surges at Hilo Harbor.
According to Jason Armstrong, Parks & Recreation Department Public Information Officer, no Hawaii County parks have been closed due to the high surf.
