Akaka speaks out against Blunt amendment

MEDIA RELEASE

U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Akaka spoke on the Senate floor to urge his colleagues to vote in opposition to the Blunt amendment.

The amendment would not only reverse the landmark gains in women’s access to contraception, health care, and preventative health services achieved by the Obama Administration under the Affordable Care Act, it would allow any employer or health plan issuer to refuse coverage of any service for any reason — not just religious objections. It could lead to devastating health outcomes for more than 20 million women across the country.

“Tomorrow (Thursday) we will be voting on an amendment that would not only undo that progress, it would move us backwards. What is especially frightening is that this amendment goes much farther than just reversing the rule, because it is not limited to religiously affiliated entities,” Akaka said.

“The proposal would allow any employer or health plan issuer to refuse coverage of any service for any reason – not just religious objections,” he said.
