Boys Basketball: Heartbreak for Hilo, Kamehameha

Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Kamehameha Schools Hawaii had a rough day.

Several players were fighting off a possible case of food poisoning or stomach virus, point guard Lanaki Apele suffered an elbow injury and then they blew a 10-point lead to lose in the Division I semifinal Friday evening on Oahu.

No. 2 seed Kahuku staged a fourth-quarter comeback to win 57-50, but No. 3 seed Kamehameha Schools Hawaii deserves credit for even taking the court.

Kamehameha managed to take a 36-31 lead into half time.

Kamehameha built a 10-point lead in the third quarter, but a series of turnovers put Kahuku back in the game.

Several of the Kamehameha players and coach Dominic Pacheco fell ill late Thursday and struggled to get hydrated and fit in time for the 7 p.m. Friday tip-off. At least five players reportedly visited the health clinic on the Kamehameha Schools Kapalama.

Kahuku plays No. 1 seed Punahou in the final 7 p.m. Saturday. Kamehameha faces No 4 seed Baldwin for third place.

Also in Division I, Hilo was dumped by Leilehua, 60-55, for a chance to play for fifth place.

In Division II, No. 2 seed HPA was bounced by McKinley and now faces Seabury Hall for third place.

Also in Division II, Kohala was defeated by St. Francis, 72-67, and lost the chance to play for fifth place.
