Golf coaches featured at Vulcan Athletic Club luncheon Tuesday (Feb 14)

MEDIA RELEASE

The Vulcan Athletic Club will hold its monthly luncheon on Tuesday, February 14 at noon in the Palm Lounge room at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort.

Guest speakers will be head men’s golf coach Earl Tamiya and head women’s golf coach Jim DeMello. The public is invited to attend this event to get a breakdown on the upcoming spring season for both teams.

Coach Tamiya’s team is coming off of a very successful 2011 season. The Vulcans won the Pac West team championship while freshman Blake Snyder brought home the individual title. The Vulcans followed up that great showing by qualifying or the NCAA Division II national championship by finishing 5th in the central/west regional in Albuquerque, NM. Freshmen Jamie Hall started off the fall season by winning the St. Martins invitational in Seattle, Washington back in September and sophomore Travis Russell finished in second place at the Lindsay Olive Wildcat Classic in October. Hall and Russell finished 1st and 2nd at the Dennis Rose Classic in early November and led the Vulcan’s to the team title at the Waikoloa King’s golf course.

Coach DeMello’s has experienced some early season success as well. Dayna Bersamin won the individual title and led the Lady Vulcans to a 23 stroke team victory at the Culturame Women’s Golf Classic in Aloha, Oregon in October. The ladies also fashioned a third place team finish at the Dennis Rose Classic in November.

The Vulcan Athletic Club is organized under the University of Hawai’i Foundation and is focused on providing financial, scholarship and service support to the UH Hilo Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. For information on or applications for the VAC call 974-7700.
