Crash brings down utility pole in Holualoa, closes highway and causes power outage

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Fire/rescue crews responded to an 8:04 p.m. alarm Saturday (Feb 11) to Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 180) South of the eight mile marker in Holualoa for a vehicle crash which brought down a utility pole and lines.

The Southbound vehicle struck a support pole which caused a utility pole to sheer off at its base bringing down lines with it. The utility pole fell on the mauka side of the road while the support pole was across the highway. The vehicle came to a stop about 100 yards South of the downed poles.

The lone driver of the vehicle was not injured in the crash. Police were on the scene investigating the cause of the crash and the highway was closed to traffic due to the downed lines. Power was out in Holualoa due to the crash and was restored about 10 p.m.

HELCO crews are working on repairing the poles and lines with police estimating the highway remaining closed until about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday (Feb 12) as repairs are being made. Local traffic will be allowed along the highway but motorists are advised to use caution and avoid the area if possible.

  1. Why do we have another power outage in holualoa?
    Monday evening from 7 :45 until ?
Another accident? Bad lighting on roads?
    Weak poles? Bad company ?
Please let us know since we pay high bills to hello!
