Kamehameha Schools Hawaii ran away with the Division II girls basketball state championship Friday evening on Oahu.
A final score of 57-36 secured the Warriors third title in eight years, but a first for Chelsea Poe, who was named the Impact Player of the Game.
Poe, now a senior, had played in two state tournaments during her high school career, being dumped out of both tournaments by 3-point margins.
Poe said it ‘feels amazing’ to be a state champion on her third trip to the tournament. Especially as her sister, Casey, a sophomore was also a teammate.
Running out to a quick 8-0 lead and keeping the pressure on, No. 2 seed Kamehameha carried a 39-18 lead into half time.
The most notable half-tme stat: Kamehameha hit 50 percent of its field goal attempts, while Kauai could manage only 26 percent.
Kauai was seeded No. 4 and was making its first championship game appearance.
Kamehameha Schools previously won the Division II championship in 2005 and 2007. The school was state runner-up last year and also in 2006 and 2009.
Earlier in Division II action, HPA dropped the third place game against Maryknoll, 51-39 to take fourth place.
