Police locate two men wanted in connection with Hilo assault

Big Island police are renewing their request for information about two men wanted for questioning in connection with an incident last week fronting a local business in Hilo.

On Wednesday (February 1) shortly before midnight, a 20-year-old man reportedly entered the car of a man he knew in front of a restaurant in the 1500 block of Kamehameha Avenue. Once inside the vehicle, a second man physically restrained the victim while both men assaulted him.

The victim managed to break free and escape from the vehicle, which fled onto Kamehameha Avenue. Police have recovered the car.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section are looking for the driver, identified as 21-year-old Waylen Keone Carenio Jr., whose last known address was in Kamuela.

Carenio is also wanted for a new Grand Jury indictment. On Monday morning (February 6), a Grand Jury indicted him for manslaughter in connection with the death of 44-year-old Roy Williams Jr. of Mountain View. Williams died following an altercation December 3 fronting a sports bar in Hilo.

Carenio is described as about 5-foot-l, about 150 pounds, with short brown hair and brown eyes. Both his arms are fully tattooed from the shoulders to the wrists. He has the word “KEONE” on his abdomen, and “FBI” in cursive on his lower back.

The second man wanted for questioning in connection with the February 1 incident is 24-year-old Turner Kaimana Au of Hilo. Au is described as part Hawaiian, about 5-foot-10, about 180 pounds with green eyes and short brown hair that is sometimes dyed blond. He also often wears a mustache and a goatee. Au has several tattoos, including a scantily clad female on his back, “Harley Jane” on his left chest, intertwined black strands and a skull on his right forearm, and Polynesian designs on his left forearm.

Both men may be armed and should not be approached. Instead, police ask that anyone who sees either man immediately call 911 or the police non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
