Parker School takes first place in state debate tournament

MEDIA RELEASE

On Saturday, Dec. 17, the Parker School debate team brought home the first place trophy from this year’s final non-qualifying debate tournament at McKinley High School in Honolulu.

Parker placed first for highest percentage of wins, and second for the highest number of wins (Punahou placed first for number of wins).

Twenty schools from throughout the state participated in the tournament, which was a combined speech and debate event. Parker’s team competed in the debate category.

Parker School junior Olivia Armandroff, and senior Anna Moritz were both undefeated in this tournament.

“It was great to see how well our case fared in a competitive tournament. Anna and I were excited by how well we did as well as by the success of the team as a whole,” Armandroff said.

In the Beginning Public Forum debate category, Elliott Jacobsen and Emily Skladzien (both 11th grade) scored five wins and one loss; Evan Kasberg (11th grade) and Marie Jobes (10th grade) also scored five and one in Novice Lincoln Douglas; and Jesse Tarnas (12th grade) scored five and one in the Championship Lincoln Douglas category.

Nineteen out of the 23 students on the Parker team earned a “superior” rating.

Parker’s debate coach and headmaster Carl Sturges said, “I was impressed with how ready to compete these kids were, a day after they got out for Christmas break. It was an incredible group performance by everybody.”

Parker School will host the first NIT qualifying tournament Jan. 13-14.
