Big Island native Mana Silva has been signed to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.

The Hilo-born Kamehameha High School 2006 graduate went undrafted this year, but had short stints with the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills this fall.

The NFL team announced Tuesday it had placed rookie running back DeMarco Murray (fractured ankle) and safety Barry Church (separated shoulder) on injured reserve.

To bolster the roster, the Cowboys signed Silva and veteran running back Sammy Morris, who played with Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett in Miami in 2004.

Silva, who majored in psychology at University of Hawaii, finished his career as the school’s all-time interceptions record with 14. He also earned first-team all-Western Athletic Conference honor.

A 2006 graduate of Kamehameha Schools in Keaau, Silva lettered three times in football and basketball and twice in track.

Silva is married to Keilah; they have a son, Kauahe. He has one brother and one sister and parents are Maurice and Lily-Ann Silva of Hilo.

Free agent safety Mana Silva has been added to the 53 man roster to Dallas Cowboys to increase the safety depth. Silva, who was claimed off the Bills’ practice squad and went to training camp in Baltimore, was a collegiate standout at Hawaii. Silva should help on special teams and add depth to a position that lost Barry Church to IR.
