The Annual Dennis Rose Intercollegiate Tournament is slated to begin on Monday, October 31 at the Waikoloa Resort Golf Complex.

The two-day tournament field includes men’s and women’s team from the Academy of Art University, California State University East Bay, Cal State Monterey Bay, Sonoma State University, Grand Canyon University, St. Martin’s University and host University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 1:14 p.m. alarm Friday (Oct 28) to Pololu Valley Beach for a man who nearly drowned.

The 59 year-old man found himself in trouble while in the ocean due to his unfamiliarity with the beach and ocean currents at Pololu Valley beach. The man was pulled from the water by friends and bystanders.

The Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawaiʻi recognized Officer Michael Santos on Thursday (October 27) as "Officer of the Month" for October. 

Santos, a patrol officer in the South Hilo District, was honored for for his outstanding work in arresting a wanted convicted felon for two no-bail probation violation warrants and several felony offenses.
