Cross Country: HPA girls are state champs; Waiakea boys 9th

The HPA girls ganged up on the rest of the state and brought home the cross country state crown this weekend on Maui.

While they surrendered the first four spots, the HPA girls hung together and secured places 5-9.

Honors go to Kristiana Van Pernis and Mariah Haight – a pair of sophomores – and their teammates Zoe Sims, Emily Evans and Kelly Ulrich.

Also in the top 15 were No. 11 Kelsie Kobayashi of Waiakea and No. 15 Kari Van Mols of Kealakehe.

The Hilo girls team also ran its way into the top 10 with a seventh place finish.

Waiakea boys’ team landed in ninth place overall, with a top showing from Jackson Halford in eighth place.

Rounding out the top 10 in the state was Honokaa.
