Waiakea, HPA students among APEC essay winners

MEDIA RELEASE

Two Big Island high school students are among five winners of an essay contest sponsored by APEC.

They will be attending a function with President Obama and other world leaders during APEC week.

They also received an Apple iPad and will have their essays placed on the APEC Hawaii Host Committee website at www.apec2011hawaii.com

The winning students:

* Alexander Bitter, Waiakea High School, 12th grade (Hawaii Island)
* Ben Chao, Iolani School, 11th grade (Oahu)
* Matthew Matasci, St. Anthony Junior/Senior High, 12th grade (Maui);
* Shane-Justin Nuuhiwa, Kamehameha Schools, 11th grade (Kapalama campus – Oahu)
* Zoe Sims, Hawaii Preparatory Academy, 11th grade (Hawaii Island)

Ten other students, including one from the Big Island, were given honorable mentions. They each won a $100 Apple Card.

* Evan Chinn, Iolani School, 12th grade
* Aloe Corry, Honolulu Waldorf School, 12th grade
* Ashley Fuerst, Kapolei High School, 11th grade

* Kyle Jones, Konawaena High School, 11th grade
* Dan Ju, Henry J. Kaiser High School, 11th grade
* Sarah Tyler, Punahou School, 11th grade
* Tiffany Yu, Iolani School, 11th grade

    APEC succeeded in twisting the arms of the Hawaii Dept. of Education, into allowing APEC to go to public schools and wasting student’s time with ‘essay competition’ about the merits of the Asia-Pacific Economic Conference
    I am an educator, and disagree with the powerful lobby exerting its influence in schools paid by taxpayers. APEC is values money over humanity.
    It is unconstitutional for APEC to exert their influence and power in schools.
