Police warns public about rash of vehicle break-ins and tailgate thefts

MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are warning the public about recent car break-ins and thefts of pickup truck tailgates in Hilo.

During the month of September, police investigated reports of 10 vehicle break-ins and six thefts of tailgates.

In the tailgate thefts, which have occurred in various locations in Hilo, the thieves have targeted Toyota Tacoma trucks.

The car break-ins have taken place in downtown Hilo, Honoliʻi and the Hilo High School track—usually during the late night and early morning hours. The primary method of entry is by breaking a window or reaching through a partially opened window to unlock a door. Victims of these crimes have included both visitors and local residents.

Police remind the public that all vehicles left unattended should be locked and secured properly. Any items left inside should be concealed from view. If at all possible, don’t leave valuables inside at all.

Police ask that the public to report any suspicious activity and provide any leads that might help identify possible suspects by calling the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Crime Stoppers is a volunteer program run by ordinary citizens who want to keep their community safe. Crime Stoppers doesn’t record calls or subscribe to caller ID. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
