Fire/rescue crews responded to a 12:52 p.m. alarm Wednesday (Oct 5) to Highway 19 near the 30 mile marker in Ookala for a brushfire.

Crews found a 1/2 acre brushfire burning in tall guinea and California grass, ironwood trees and non-native plants. Traffic was detoured along Highway 19 around fire vehicles. The fire was fanned by 10 mph winds coming from the South-Southeast. The fire destroyed a makeshift abandoned lean-to and swept through an abandoned cemetery. Ground crews along with water drops from Chopper One halted the spread of the fire which consumed 6-8 acres. The fire came within 400 feet of a home in Kukui Camp.

A fire crew is posted at the scene overnight to watch for flare-ups.
