UH Hilo Media Symposium (Oct. 1)

MEDIA RELEASE

Mark your calendars for 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 1 for the University of Hawaii Hilo Media Symposium. Meant as a training for Ke Kalahea staff, the symposium has expanded to the greater campus community and beyond.

High school and college students and professionals in the island community will make their way to the third floor of Campus Center for the all-day media related discussions. This will not only serve as an educational opportunity, it will be a great venue for networking as well.

Media professionals and journalists-turned-bloggers from across the state will be on hand to teach workshops and lead panel discussions.

Attendees will be able to choose from workshops on journalism fundamentals, libel, citizen rights and responsibilities, and the basics of the Sunshine Law.

Interviewing techniques will be demonstrated as Office of Information Practices (OIP) Director Cheryl Kakazu Park and Sen. Les Ihara, the legislator known to be the greatest advocate of the Sunshine Law, answer questions in a staged press conference.

There will be an iPad workshop led by Marty Orlando, of Tropic Mac. Ace an AP Style Quiz and you could win a Kapoho Kine / Zipline Through Paradise adventure package. Sip coffee from Hilo Coffee Mill, enjoy refreshments from KTA Super Stores or a bento from Sodexo.

The day will be packed with a series of compelling discussions about media and journalism, and the trend toward digital media.

Prior to the media symposium – Friday, Sept. 30 – is a free Office of Information Practices Sunshine Law training being offered to attorneys and non-attorneys alike.

OIP Director Cheryl Kakazu Park and OIP Staff Attorney Jennifer Brooks will lead this training at UH Hilo, at the same time they are here for a symposium workshop and staged press conference.
