Most police officers spend most of their time fighting crime, but this weekend some cops are donating their time to raise funds for Special Olympics.

The blue troops are spending the weekend atop a scaffold at Wal-Mart stores across the state to help out the athletes.

The annual event for Special Olympics – which aims to improve the lives of those with intellectual disabilities through sports – runs 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. through Sunday.

During the last eight years, the Cop on Top event has raised $90,000 to $95,000 in for the West Hawaii chapter and, just last year, raised more than $235,000 across the state.

With the addition of a Kohala chapter, the organization is reaching out to more youngsters on the Big Island. They have the opportunity to compete on this island, Maui and at the state competition on Oahu.

Special Olympics volunteers and athletes will be manning the donation buckets at Wal-Mart through Sunday, while Big Island police officers ride the scaffolding and sit in dunking-booths.

Be sure to drop your extra change in those buckets … the $$$ stay on this island.
