Tenth annual Cop on Top fundraiser (Sept. 16 -18)

MEDIA RELEASE

Local law enforcement officials will be receiving tall orders as they rise to the challenge of raising funds for Special Olympics Hawaii’s 10th annual Cop on Top fundraiser.

Officers will stake out the top of scaffoldings Sept. 16-18 to heighten awareness and raise funds for Special Olympics athletes across the state.

This year Cop on Top will be at Walmart stores statewide as well as all Sam’s Club stores on Oahu, Aikahi Shopping Center, Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center and Hawaii Kai Shopping Center.

“This year, Cop on Top celebrates a decade of supporting the athletes of Special Olympics Hawaii and we invite the public to come out and show their support for these dedicated officers who generously give of their time for our local athletes,” said Nancy Bottelo, president, Special Olympics Hawaii.

Officers will climb the scaffolding starting at 6 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16 and will not return to the ground until 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18. Last year’s Cop on Top event raised $235,533 for Special Olympics Hawaii.

“Walmart is excited to partner with Special Olympics Hawaii for this year’s milestone event,” said Brian Halsey, Hawaii market manager for Walmart. “We invite our shoppers to show their support for Special Olympics – which plays an integral role in the lives of our families across the islands.”

“Our Special Olympics athletes are the true heroes – they face overwhelming challenges every day and donating our time for Cop on Top is just a small gesture that we can make to show our support and solidarity with these amazing individuals,” Honolulu Police Department Sergeant Ben Moszkowicz said.

Special Olympics Hawaii provides year-round sports training opportunities to more than 2,100 athletes from across the state at no cost to athletes or their families. The average cost to provide one athlete with sports training and competition is approximately $1,044 a year.
