The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows has announced a partnership with one of the world’s top female stand up paddling champions, Jenny Kalmbach.

Kalmbach, a Kona local, who is also establishing a name for herself in the stand up paddling community for her environmental endeavors, claims an impressive list of career victories including the prestigious Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard World Championship, California’s Battle of the Paddle and the Jever SUP World Cup in Germany.

Kalmbach is also in the running for the title of the 2011 Top Female Paddler at the 2011 SUP Awards in California later this month.

General Manager of Mauna Lani Bay, Brian Butterworth, said “we are excited to welcome Jenny’s energy to Team Mauna Lani as we champion the active Hawaiian lifestyle. Jenny will play an integral role in sharing her experiences and expertise, while encouraging us all to get outside, enjoy the ocean and find the life balance we all seek.”

Last year, Kalmbach was featured in Destination 3 Degrees, a film that premiered at the 2010 annual Kona Surf Film Festival held at Mauna Lani Bay.

The film follows the journey of Kalmbach and fellow elite paddler, Morgan Hoesterey, as they conquer seven of the legendary and infamous open ocean channels that link the Hawaiian Islands together.

The title drew from the three degrees of latitude that separate the islands. While their journey was an action-packed stand up paddling adventure, more importantly it was a platform to raise awareness of the impact plastic contamination has on our oceans.

Kalmbach recently completed her second mission with Destination 3 Degrees: Costa Rica, where she was born and raised. It is Kalmbach’s hope that through her paddling travels she can share the importance of reducing the use of plastic products that eventually end up in the marine environment and harming marine life.

“The ocean is my playground and I will do what I can to keep it clean and healthy,” Kalmbach said. “I hope to see more paddlers step up and take action. Whether we surf, paddle, dive or sail, I believe that all of us who enjoy the ocean have a duty to protect it.”

The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows is recognized as one of the “World’s Top Earth Friendly Getaways” and the hotel’s solar energy innovations have earned it the distinction of generating the most solar electric power of any luxury resort in the world.
