Labor Day line up of weekend events

* Queen Liliuokalani Long Distance Canoe Race – Saturday, Sept. 3, Kailua Pier

The 2011 Annual Queen Liliuokalani Outrigger Canoe Races promises to be a huge 40th annual celebration of racing, mingling and cultural events. The races are organized and hosted by the Kai Opua Canoe Club, a member of the Big Island’s Moku O Hawaii Outrigger Canoe Racing Association.

Start times:
7:30 a.m. – Iron women
7:35 a.m. – Unlimited women
7:40 a.m. – 9 women
11:45 a.m. – Iron men
11:50 a.m. – Unlimited men
11:55 a.m. – 9 men
3:30 p.m. – Award presentations for all Saturday races at Kamakahonu Bay, by the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
6:30 p.m. – Torchlight parade of paddlers from Hale Halawai Center to Kailua Pier.

* Parker Ranch Rodeo – Saturday, Sept. 3 and Sunday, Sept. 4

The 37th Annual Parker Ranch Round-Up Club Rodeo will lasso in two days of rodeo events at the Parker Ranch Rodeo Arena in Waimea.

The action-packed weekend is a fundraiser to provide scholarships for school-age children of Parker Ranch employees.

Family-style fun begins at noon Saturday with rodeo events which may include everything from open and dally team roping and double mugging, and poo wai u, to saddle bronc, bull riding, junior bull riding, wahine barrel racing, wahine steer undecorating, and more.

Always fun and exciting to watch is the century team roping competition. (One team member must be over the age of 50 and their combined ages must be more than 100). The crowd is always on its feet for the keiki barrel racing for participants 12 & under, and mutton busting (keiki sheep riding).

On Sunday, The Round Up Club, in partnership with Parker Ranch will be hosting a live auction for saddle horses and 2-year old quarter horses. Come at 10 a.m. to participate in the auction and purchase a Parker Ranch horse. For non-riders, come and experience the fast pace of a Ranch horse auction.

Sunday’s rodeo action begins again at high noon with more excitement throughout the afternoon. Ono (delicious) food and refreshments will be available both days with on-going events lasting until 4 p.m.

Tickets are $5 per person in advance from the Parker Ranch Store at the Parker Ranch Center and at the Parker Ranch Headquarters in Waimea or $6 at the gate on rodeo days. Children 10 and under are free. For more information, call 808-885-7311.

* 30 Days of Aloha Annual Poke Contest – noon Saturday, Sept. 3, Hilton Waikoloa Village Kona Ballroom

“Hawaii’s Soul Food” takes the stage at Hilton Waikoloa Village during everybody’s favorite Poke Contest. In Hawaiian, poke means “to cut or dice” and poke the dish is a traditional pūpū made with bite-sized pieces of fish, creatively prepared and seasoned with worlds of ingredients and imagination. Both home cooks and top professional chefs compete against their peers for the championship, and after the judges announce the winners, the audience gets to taste too. Tickets $7

* 30 Days of Aloha Uncle Kindy Sproat Falsetto & Storytelling Contest – 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, Waikoloa Beach Marriott.

Celebrating its 20th year, this unique folk music competition features the Island’s talented male singers of all ages, who lift their voice into the upper register and captivate the audience with the stories behind the songs. Tickets $7

* Third Annual Bieni Kohler-Johnson 5K Run/Walk, – 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, HPA

Runners, walkers, and families are invited to participate in the Third Annual Bieni Kohler-Johnson 5K Run/Walk at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy cross country course. The course, located at the school’s Upper Campus, is a challenging, but fun course that includes hills, flats, grass, and pavement. Kohler-Johnson, who graduated from HPA in 1983, passed away in June 2009 after a valiant battle against breast cancer. All proceeds benefit Bieni Kohler-Johnson ’83 Scholarship, which currently recognizes three young women who are gifted in athletics, academics, or the arts; who understand their responsibility to work hard to develop and share those gifts; and who demonstrate a sincere commitment and willingness to go the “extra mile” for friends, family, or a worthy cause. * Alii Challenge Canoe Race – 9:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5, Kailua Pier

This is the second year for the Alii Challenge (single hull – 12 person crew). The course will run north, the first turn will be at a buoy just outside the Honokohau Harbor. Then the course will double back on itself and the second turn will be at a buoy approximately 1/2 mile south of the Kailua-Kona pier. The third turn will be right about where the finish line is for Saturday’s men’s race, for a short approach to a lane marked by buoys off the pier where the crew change for the 6 women and 6 men will take place.

* Niaulani Nature Walk – 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5

Free Forest Tour in Volcano. This one-hour nature walk travels through a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on an easy, 1/7-mile loop trail. The walk introduces individuals, families, and groups to the native plants and birds of Volcano. Guides focus not only on the biological, ecological, and geological features of the area, but also the cultural usages of flora and fauna by native Hawaiians. Offered every Monday at 9:30 a.m., the weekly walk starts just one mile from the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Meet at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village (corner of Kalanikoa and Old Volcano Roads). Free (calabash donations welcome). For further information, call 967-8222.

* Fall Fashion Show – 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, Queens’ MarketPlace

To wrap up summer and ramp up the school year, Queens’ MarketPlace and Maximum Capacity have teamed up for a fun Fall Fashion Show.
