The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a High Surf Warning for the South facing shores of all Hawaiian islands. The warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Wenesday (Aug 31) and will become a High Surf Advisory sometime in the morning once surf has dropped below 15 feet. An extension of the warning is possible.
Surf of 10 to 15 feet is forecast to peak today and tonight then lower to advisory levels on Wednesday. The high surf will cause hazardous conditions for beachgoers due to dangerous rip currents, beach erosion and shore breaks. Boaters should use caution at the entrances to small boat harbors.
High tide is approximately 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and could cause coastal flooding due to the combination with the high surf. Below is a tide chart for Hilo.
