DUI stats for the week of August 15-21, 2011

During the week of August 15, 2011, through August 21, 2011, Big Island police arrested 38 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 922 DUI arrests compared with 982 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.1 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 864 major accidents so far this year compared with 875 during the same period last year, a decrease of of 1.3 percent.

So far this year, there were 15 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 20 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25 percent.

To date, 10 fatalities this year were related to drugs only (3), alcohol only (3), or a combination of both (4).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
