Mayor Billy Kenoi’s Statement on the Passing of former Mayor Herbert Matayoshi

(Hilo, Hawai’i) “Mayor Herbert Matayoshi was a community leader who possessed great intelligence, unquestionable integrity and treated everyone with aloha. As a former Hawai‘i County Councilman and mayor, he was a big supporter of Downtown Hilo and instrumental in creating significant public facilities. He put the County’s full support and financial resources into identifying and creating crucial community services including the popular Elderly Activities Division which continues to provide vital nutritional, transportation and recreational services to our island kupuna.

Having served as Mayor for 10 plus years, he left a legacy of fiscal responsibility and true compassion for all the people of Hawai’i County and was greatly admired for his unwavering dedication to his wife Mary and their 5 children. We are grateful for the many contributions of Mayor Matayoshi to our community.”
