By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

County fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:19 a.m. alarm Sunday (July 10) to the Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve to search for a lost hiker and his dog.

The 30 year-old man had wandered off the main trail and was unable to find his way out through the thick rain forest area dominated by Hapuu ferns and old growth Ohia trees. After an hour of being off the trail the man call for help via his cellphone which positioned his location via GPS. Both ground crews and a helicopter were dispatched to rescue the man.

The fire department’s Chopper One was able to find the man and dog, lowered a rescue specialist and was able to bring them out of the forest.

The man and dog were in good health.
