High surf advisory for South, North and East shores of the Big Island

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a High Surf Advisory for South, North and East shores of the Big Island until 6 p.m. Saturday (July 9).

Surf heights of six to eight feet with occasional larger sets are forecast. Dangerous rip currents and localized beach erosion can occur so ocean and beachgoers should use caution.

Small Craft Advisories are also in effect for Maalaea Bay, Pailolo Channel, Alenuihaha Channel, Big Island leeward waters and waters Southeast of the Big Island unti 6 p.m. Saturday.

Two powerful storms East of New Zealand last week are the cause of the large swells. The swells from the second storm, which are potentially larger, are expected to arrive on Friday (July 8) and last through the weekend.

There is no High Surf Advisory for North shores. Please, if your going to post info that has to do with public safety make sure you are giving the right info.

We get the advisories directly from The National Weather Service in Honolulu who specifically lists South Big Island, Big Island North and East. Note that agencies like the National Weather Service, Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and Civil Defense will always err on the side of caution.
