Kona celebrates Independence Day with parade

Hundreds of residents lined Alii Drive for the annual Kailua-Kona Community Independence Day Parade.

Nearly 70 entries ranged from military veterans to the Shriners, who have participated in every one of the 11 Independence Day parades in Kona.

Following the parade was a fireworks show over Kailua Bay.

Here’s the winning entries in the parade:

Nonprofit entries

* Floats:
Hospice of Kona; Hawaii Island Humane Society; Solar Wind Band

* Marching:
University of the Nations; Martin Ewen, stiltwalker; Green Power Girl and Super Heroes

* Patriotic:
Kona VA Clinic; Korean War Veterans; Lt. K’s Battle Brothers

* Keiki:
Hawaii Montessori School

Commercial entries

* Patriotic:
Dolphin Journeys; Wild Hawaii Ocean Adventures; Splasher’s Grill

All entries

* Best Use of Theme: Kona VA Clinic

* Best Crowd Pleaser: University of the Nations

* Judges’ Special Award: Green Power Girl and Super Heroes

* Best in Music: Solar Wind Surf Band

Winners may pick up awards at the Kona mayor’s office at the West Hawaii Civic Center. For further information, call Barbara Kossow at 323-4448.
