HELCO experiences power loss on Big Island Thursday (June 30)

HELCO experienced a power outage in parts of the Big Island Thursday (June 30). In Hawaiian Paradise Park we noted power out about 10:30 a.m. but it was restored about five minutes later.

Reports by people on Twitter indicate that power was also lost in Waikoloa Village. Internet via Road Runner services were also lost in Orchidland, Puna from reports.

Reports are coming in via Twitter that power has been restored to Waikoloa Village. Also one report about power being out in Kona, not sure where, for about 10 minutes.

HELCO MEDIA RELEASE (7/1/11)

Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) has announced that at 10:25 a.m. Thursday morning, 6/30/2011, approximately 12,643 customers in various parts of the Big Island experienced a power interruption when a HELCO generator tripped off-line unexpectedly. Other HELCO generating units in reserve were immediately started and service to all affected customers was restored by 10:37 a.m. The exact cause of the HELCO’s generator trip is still being investigated at this time.

HELCO apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused and sincerely thanks customers for their cooperation and understanding.
