Seven voyaging canoes arrived this weekend in Hilo Bay, just one of the stops on the “Te Mana O Te Moana,” or “The Spirit of the Sea,” expedition.

In crossing the Pacific from Aotearoa to Hawaii, the adventurers aim to sail in their ancestors’ wake and learn from their wisdom. Organizers said they also want to teach young people about the ancient bond with the sea.

The fleet left New Zealand in April and was welcomed by Big Island residents and dignitaries.

The canoes represent Tahiti, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, New Aotearoa, New Guinea, Vanuatu, Kiribati and the Solomon Islands.
