A pair of hikers wandered off the trail to Pu‘u O‘o Crater Monday May (30), found themselves lost in the thick rainforest and had to call for help to get out.

A 28 year-old man and 32 year-old woman were hiking out of the Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve when they wandered off the main trail and ended up .6 miles Southeast of the trail. Unable to find their way back out of the forest the pair were able to call the fire department via a cellphone which had intermittent signal coverage in the forest. Rescue crews responded at 4:44 p.m. for the call.

The fire department helicopter crew was able to talk to the hikers via cellphone, located them via Chopper One and lowered ground crews near the main trail. Rescuers hand-cut a path to the lost hikers and all involved hiked out in good health and without injuries. The last of the fire/rescue crews were reported back at their station at 11:02 p.m.

The area consists of pristine Hawaiian rain forest with large Hapuu ferns, old growth Ohia trees and has been the site for hikers lost in the past who have wandered off the trail.
