Horse Expo to include equine medicine symposium

MEDIA RELEASE

Hawaii Island Humane Society’s Hawaii Horse Expo 2011 is slated for Aug. 5-7 on Hawaii’s Big Island at historic Anna’s Ranch in Waimea. Proceeds from the annual event benefit the Humane Society’s Horse Rescue Fund, which helps abused and abandoned horses on the island.

New to the line-up of informative clinics and hands-on demonstrations will be an all day Equine Medicine Symposium on Friday, Aug. 5 at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Top equine veterinarians will share their experiences so that attendees learn better care for their animals.

“I was fortunate to be invited to the American Veterinary Medical Association convention in Atlanta, Georgia where California equine behaviorist Dr. Robert Miller and Colorado equine veterinarian Dr. Mark Fitch presented a series of lectures relating to equine medicine,” Hawaii Horse Expo producer Nancy Jones said. “I knew immediately that their presentation needed to be part of our Expo and am thrilled they’re able to join us.”

Content presented during the Equine Medicine Symposium will benefit professional veterinarians as well as recreational horse owners so they may better address the needs and proper care of horses, Jones said.

Symposium Topics will include The Art of Handling Equine Patients, Different Approaches for Different Patients, Training New-Born Foals to be Cooperative Future Patients, Physical Restraint, Chemical Restraint, and Problem Solving.

Joining Drs. Miller and Fitch will be Waimea veterinarian Dr. Brady Bergin, who will extensively cover the subject of reproduction.

The cost of the Symposium, which runs 9 a.m.-5 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break, is $50. Register by July 22 and receive $10 off the fee. Symposium registration is limited to 50 people.

Registration forms are available at Hawaii Island Humane Society shelters in Kona, Waimea and Keaau. Interested persons may also download registration forms at www.HawaiiHorseExpo.com or contact Nancy Jones at 808-887-2301.

Organizers have once again confirmed an impressive list of nationally and internationally noted experts for Hawaii Horse Expo 2011.

In addition to Drs. Miller, Fitch and Bergin, on hand will be accomplished horseman and trainer Tommy Garland, RFD TV host Rick Lamb, “HorseThink” founder and trainer Scot Hansen, and TTouch founder Linda Tellington-Jones. These experts will share their knowledge in a variety of horse-related disciplines during three days of clinics and demonstrations that include personal interaction to enhance attendees’ learning.
