Missing maile pickers plucked from forest in Waiohinu

Fire/rescue personnel responded to a 9:03 a.m. alarm Tuesday (May 17) for a report of two men who had gone into the forest Monday morning at 10 a.m. above Waiohinu to pick maile and did not return.

The missing men were disoriented in a heavily forested area and were able to communicate with fire crews via text messages. The men were instructed to build a signal fire which allowed the Fire Department’s Chopper One to pinpoint their location which was 1.5 miles above Lorenzo Road in Waiohinu.

The helicopter crew airlifted the men one at a time via a Billy Pugh net to safety. The men did not require any medical attention and no injuries were reported.
