The talents of Halau Kalaakeakauikawekiu, Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa’s adopted halau, will be shared beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 7 when the halau presents its 6th Annual “Mama … my Mama, I Love You, a Mother’s Day Celebration of Hawaiian Chant, Dance and Music.”

Entertainment in the Keauhou Convention Center Ballroom will feature award-winning Halau Kalaakeakauikawekiu led by Kumu Hula Kenneth “Aloha” Victor along with Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning performers Pekelo, Na Palapalai, Amy Hanaialii Gilliom, and special surprise guests.

Once again, Penny Kelii-Vredenburg will keep things on track throughout the evening as mistress of ceremonies.

“We always look forward to this event so that we might honor all mothers in true Hawaiian tradition,” Victor said. “Through chants, dances, and music, we are able to share a special cultural evening with friends, family, and most especially, with mom.”

Funds raised at the annual event will help underwrite expenses for Halau Kalaakeakauikawekiu to send more than 30 dancers to a cultural exchange in July in Hiroshima.

Tickets are $40 per person and include live entertainment and a silent auction with opportunities to bid on fine Hawaiian art, crafts and island adventures. Hawaiian food plates and beverages will be available for sale throughout the evening.

Halau Kalaakeakauikawekiu of Kona is a culture-based organization founded on the mission to heighten indigenous Hawaiian culture awareness and participation through educational programs and annual performances.

The halau focuses on maintaining and perpetuating the beliefs, teachings, philosophies, practices and traditions of Hawaiian culture through hula.

Halau Kalaakeakauikawekiu practices on site at Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa each Wednesday and Saturday and guests are welcome to observe.
