Heavy showers and thunderstorms prompted flash flood warnings for the Big Island Friday (May 6).
Rain in Kealakekua fell at 3.4 inches per hour Friday afternoon according to National Weather Service rain gages. Kona experienced heavy rain due to a nearly stationary system. Hawaii County Civil Defense reported heavy ponding on Alii Drive and Mamalahoa Highway. Drivers should still use caution on roadways and should not try to cross fast moving water.
At 4:48 p.m. Friday (May 6) Hawaii County Police reported Mamalahoa Highway was closed in Kainaliu due to flooding and urged drivers to use the bypass highway to get between North and South Kona.
As of 5:26 p.m. Friday (May 6) Hawaii County Civil Defense reports that the flash flood warning has been cancelled for the Big Island and that all roads are now open.
Heavy showers, thunderstorms, lightning and wind gusts in excess of 30 knots are still developing over coastal waters according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu. Small craft advisories are in effect for Hawaiian waters until 6 p.m. Saturday (May 7).
