MEDIA RELEASE

A statewide sales team led by the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB) and Hawaii Convention Center (HCC) is seeking new meetings business this week in Washington, DC, at Springtime Expo, the industry’s largest one-day exhibition.

Springtime Expo takes place Thursday, April 28, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and will be a superb showcase for Hawaii’s diversity of offerings, as more than 4,000 meeting planners and industry professionals are expected to attend.

“Hawaii’s presence at the Springtime Expo is an important opportunity to promote the islands as an ideal location for business and group meetings,” said Mike McCartney, president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA). “The HTA is committed to marketing Hawaii as a premier global meetings destination and capitalize on the interest in our state with the upcoming APEC Leaders’ Meeting in November.”

Joining HVCB and HCC in the Hawaii sales effort are representatives from The Fairmont Orchid, Grand Wailea, Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa, Hilton Waikoloa Village, Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, The Kahala Hotel & Resort, Kauai Beach Resort, Prince Resorts Hawaii, Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, and The Waikiki Edition.

Along with the Hawaii sales exhibit at Springtime Expo, HVCB and HCC are co-hosting a special Hawaii reception for prospective new clients based in the region, while also making sales calls throughout the week.

“Washington is a great meetings market and we have a strong complement of partners to help us sell Hawaii and generate new business opportunities for resort properties and other ancillary businesses statewide,” said Michael Murray, CMP, CMM, CASE, vice president of sales and marketing for HVCB’s corporate meetings and incentives division.

Organizing the Hawaii sales exhibit are Meredith Parkins, HVCB regional sales director, and Sherri Thadeus, HCC regional director of accounts. Both are based in the Washington, DC area, which is home to the nation’s largest association market and the base for more than 3,500 national and international associations.

HVCB is contracted by the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), the state of Hawaii’s tourism agency, to provide marketing management services for the conventions, meetings and incentives market segment. HTA was established in 1998 to ensure a successful visitor industry well into the future.

Its mission is to strategically manage Hawaii tourism in a sustainable manner consistent with the state of Hawaii’s economic goals, cultural values, preservation of natural resources, community desires, and visitor industry needs.
